Sodium-ion batteries are becoming a more viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries for certain applications, especially stationary uses like factories and homes. Sodium is more abundant and easier to extract than lithium, making it a cheaper option. While sodium-ion batteries are heavier and have lower energy density than lithium-ion batteries, they can withstand millions of charge and discharge cycles. Research is ongoing to improve the density of sodium-ion batteries, and some believe they could be suitable for use in electric vehicles in the future.
