Why TAM 3054 Accelerated While Braking

TAM Airlines Flight 3054 suffered a catastrophic accident while landing at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, Brazil. The Airbus A320 touched down on a wet runway but failed to decelerate properly because one engine remained at full thrust while the other was in reverse. Under intense pressure and concerned about the wet surface and a disabled thrust reverser, the captain made a critical error during the landing procedure. The aircraft was unable to stop, overran the runway, crossed a major road, and crashed into a nearby building, resulting in 199 deaths. The investigation determined that the crew’s incorrect thrust-control actions were the primary cause, rather than a mechanical failure.
