Why The Old Testament Still Matters // Pastor Amelia Houdek
from Sunday Sermons · host King of Kings Lutheran Church
What if reading scripture isn’t about information to master, but serves as the witness of generations of people learning to recognize the living God? The Old Testament matters not because it gives us more facts about God, but because it preserves the unfolding relationship between God and God's people. As Christians, we read these Scriptures through Christ—not to erase Israel's witness, but because in Christ we believe God's self-revelation reaches its fullest expression. Yet even then, we return to these ancient stories not merely asking, "What does this teach?" but "What kind of relationship is unfolding here?" Our goal is not mastery. Our goal is communion. Scripture is not simply a book that tells us what to think. It is the record of a relationship that invites us into one of our own.
