In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through Hebrews Chapter 2 — the chapter that answers the question Chapter 1 created: if the Son is so much greater than the angels, why did he become lower than them?The chapter opens with the first of five warning passages in Hebrews: pay greater attention to the things that were heard, lest perhaps we drift away. Not fall, not reject — drift. The slow, passive movement of something coming loose through inattention rather than decision. And the logic: if the word spoken through angels demanded a just recompense for every transgression, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?Then the question from Psalm 8. Humanity was crowned with glory and all things put under its feet — but we don't yet see that. We see instead him who was made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone.Then the reason for the incarnation stated plainly. Since the children share in flesh and blood, he also partook of the same — that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death — and deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. He was obligated in all things to be made like his brothers — to become a merciful and faithful high priest — to make atonement for the sins of the people.And the final verse that carries the most pastoral weight: for in that he himself has suffered, being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. Not sympathize. Help.
