The Major League Baseball playoffs are underway. This year’s storylines—from underdogs chasing history to dynasties led by stars like Shohei Ohtani—remind us that even the best records don’t guarantee success. As in baseball, investing too much of ourselves in things likely to bring us disappointment can leave us feeling wounded. But Jesus warned we should expect suffering in this world. In fact, Jesus was quite clear that we should expect a level of suffering in this life that is directly related to our decision to obey him.
