Why World Cup VAR Is Still Getting It WRONG!

In this episode of the Joy of Football Podcast, Martin Tyler and Neil Barnett react to one of England's greatest FIFA World Cup performances, as Thomas Tuchel's side produce a stunning display to defeat Mexico and book their place in the quarter-finals. Is this the best England team performance of the modern era? And has Harry Kane finally reached the level of the world's elite strikers? The pair discuss Jude Bellingham's brilliance, Marc Guéhi's emergence as one of the tournament's outstanding defenders, Jordan Pickford's response to criticism, and why Tuchel's squad-building and use of substitutes could prove decisive as England chase World Cup glory. Elsewhere, Norway continue to capture the imagination thanks to Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard and Patrick Berg, while Brazil's latest World Cup disappointment prompts a debate over whether the five-time champions have lost the mystery, magic and firepower that once made them football's most feared nation. Voice of Passion returns with a fiery discussion about VAR, as Neil argues that slow-motion replays are fundamentally changing how referees interpret football incidents. Martin agrees that officials should always view challenges at full speed before analysing them frame-by-frame, leading to one of the podcast's most passionate debates yet. The pair also tackle Paraguay's controversial tactics against France, celebrate Cape Verde's thrilling encounter with Argentina as one of the matches of the tournament, and examine why traditional heavyweights Germany, the Netherlands and the USA have all fallen short. They finish by reflecting on the ageing superstars still competing on the world's biggest stage, including Cristiano Ronaldo, and ask whether football's greatest names always know when the time is right to step away. A packed World Cup edition full of tactical insight, football history, passionate debate, and behind-the-scenes stories from Martin Tyler in Dallas. #worldcup #worldcup2026 #fifa #fifaworldcup #worldcupfinal #england #argentina #egypt Hosted by The Revive Lounge Ltd UCsdye1hUxP4xhgBx9zvuSjg Subscribe to https://youtube.com/@TheReviveLounge?si=L5ddzrJrtSmErtJ5 Support the Pod https://patreon.com/TheJoysofFootballPodcast?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink Read us on Substack https://martintylerandneilbarnett.substack.com/ Follow our Twitter https://x.com/TheJOF Follow our Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@joy_of_football_pod?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Follow our Instagram https://https://www.instagram.com/joy_of_football_pod/ Contact us via: [email protected] Music by Arron Clague - https://www.instagram.com/arronclague?igsh=aHg1bjQ3OHpmaXIz Intro Sequence by Wellong Sadewo (wells.illustration): https://www.instagram.com/wells.illustration/ A massive thank you to our Patreon Supporters: Nick Parmenter Hillary Abbott Daniel Butigan Tommy Mck Katie Watson Nathan A Learn more about your ad choices.
