Why Your Best Decisions Never Come From Your Head (And What to Trust Instead)

from Empowered Way Podcast · host Kathryn Eriksen

Hello Empowered Wayers!Sometimes, I have to take a news-break and screen-break. Too much is moving too fast and it feels like everyone is holding on with their fingertips, while looking down at the abyss.Other times, I tend to grasp for certainty through endless analysis. I make pro-and-con lists, ask everyone's opinion, and exhaust myself trying to think my way to the "right" decision. Instead of avoiding or controlling the uncontrollable, there is another way. In my coaching, writing, and speaking, I highlight the difference between masculine and feminine energies. Think of masculine energy as doing, feminine energy as being.A balance of both energies creates a meaningful life. It’s when these energies are out of balance that the feminine energy of being can transform chaos into calm, indecision into clarity. The sacred feminine offers us three powerful principles for navigating decisions, whether we're choosing what to have for breakfast or making life-altering changes. These aren't mystical concepts reserved for spiritual retreats; they're practical tools you can use today to move through our chaotic world with grace and clarity.1. Trust Your Inner Knowing Over Mental LoopsThe feminine principle invites us to listen below the noise of overthinking. While masculine energy tends to analyze and categorize, feminine wisdom recognizes that your body already knows what serves your highest good. Before your next decision, try this: Sit quietly and imagine choosing Option A. Notice what happens in your chest, your stomach, your shoulders. Does your body expand or contract? Do you feel lighter or heavier? Now imagine Option B. Your body's response is data—often more reliable than your mental calculations.I recently watched a client agonize over whether to end a professional relationship that produced more than 50,000 Instagram followers. Her mind created spreadsheets and timelines, but when she dropped into her body, the answer was immediate: a sense of expansion and relief flooded through her when she imagined giving notice. Three months later, she's thriving in her business, wondering why she waited so long to trust what she already knew.2. Honor the Rhythm of UnfoldingMasculine energy pushes toward immediate action and linear, measured progress. Sacred feminine wisdom understands that some decisions need time to gestate, like seeds growing in dark soil before they're ready to sprout. Not every choice needs to be made today. Some of our most important decisions benefit from what I call "sacred incubation"—holding a question lightly while we live our lives and notice what wants to emerge. This doesn't mean endless procrastination; it means recognizing when rushing a decision could cut off possibilities still trying to reveal themselves.Give yourself permission to say, "I'm sitting with this question" rather than forcing premature clarity. Often, the perfect timing and the perfect solution arrive together when we stop trying to control the process.3. Choose Connection Over CompetitionThe sacred feminine makes decisions through the lens of relationship—not just with others, but with life itself. Instead of asking "How do I win?" or "What's in it for me?", feminine wisdom asks:"What choice honors my connections and expands love in the world?"This doesn't mean sacrificing yourself for others or making decisions based on guilt or obligation. It means recognizing that we're all interconnected, and choices that honor this truth tend to create more sustainable happiness for everyone involved. When you connect with the Divine, the Universe, or Source, your actions are informed by your being. Your perspective enlarges and expands from your own narrow view to encompass a broader view. As I wrote in my book, “Heart Dancing,” as you “let love lead, you are home.”When facing a difficult conversation with a friend, instead of strategizing how to be "right," ask yourself: "What would love do here?" When considering a career change, rather than focusing solely on salary or status, explore: "How can this choice allow me to contribute my unique gifts?"Living the PracticeThese principles transform decision-making from a mental struggle into a sacred practice. They remind us that we don't have to have all the answers immediately, that our bodies carry profound wisdom, and that choices made from love create ripple effects of healing in our world. The next time you feel overwhelmed by a decision, remember: You are not just your analytical mind. You are a being of infinite wisdom, connected to the sacred feminine energy that has guided humanity through every crisis and transformation.Trust the knowing that lives beneath your thoughts. Honor the rhythm of your unfolding. Choose connection over separation. You already have everything you need to navigate whatever comes next.To your empowered choices, KathrynEmpowered Way is a reader-supported publication.
