Zum zweiten Mal seit den Terrorattacken der Hamas auf Israel am 7. Oktober reist Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz nach Israel. Er trifft den israelischen Ministerpräsidenten Benjamin Netanjahu und Staatspräsident Izchak Herzog. Es wird erwartet, dass Scholz für eine Feuerpause werben und sich für eine bessere Versorgung der Zivilbevölkerung in Gaza einsetzen wird. In den USA, dem mächtigsten Verbündeten Israels, wird die Kritik an Israels Vorgehen im Gazastreifen beim Krieg gegen die Hamas immer unüberhörbarer. In einem Interview mit MSNBC hat US-Präsident Joe Biden kürzlich gesagt, dass Netanjahu Israel mehr schade als nütze. Anna Sauerbrey, außenpolitische Koordinatorin der ZEIT, begleitet den Bundeskanzler auf seiner Nahostreise und ordnet im Podcast ein, welches Gewicht seine Worte in Israel haben. Die Bundeswehr hat ein Personalproblem. Die Truppenstärke soll laut Verteidigungsministerium bis 2031 von 181.000 auf 203.000 wachsen, doch es gibt immer weniger Rekrutinnen und Rekruten. Denn nach dem Überfall Russlands auf die Ukraine soll Deutschland "kriegstüchtig" werden, wie es Verteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius ausgedrückt hat. In der Debatte auch: die Wehrpflicht.
