Wild Taiwan Monkeys Are Not Pets

from News For Kids · host ICRT

I love monkeys. And we have a special monkey here in Taiwan. They are called "Formosan macaques", but let's just call them Taiwan monkeys. Taiwan monkeys are different from monkeys anywhere else in the world! But Taiwan's monkeys are wild animals. And wild animals are not pets. Some people take baby Taiwan monkeys, and make them pets! It might sound like fun to have a monkey for a pet… but they are not pets. They are wild animals and they should be free. So, now there is a new rule! From this year, no Taiwan monkey can be a pet! But we can't just take pet monkeys to the mountains and say, "Go free! Have a good life!" Those pet monkeys don't know how to live in the wild. So, the new rule says people who already have pet monkeys need to get a special paper. They can keep those pets, but they can't do it again. And from this year, no one can take any more wild monkeys and keep them as pets. Do you like this new rule? This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
