In this interview, SDP leader William Clouston explains why the party believes the issue deserves further discussion — and why the debate has become one of the most complex and contentious topics in modern British politics. Clouston argues that questions surrounding gender policy, law, and public institutions have evolved rapidly in recent years. As a result, political parties across the spectrum are being forced to reconsider how their policies respond to changing legal frameworks, social debates, and the practical realities faced by schools, workplaces, and public services. For the Social Democratic Party, the decision to revisit elements of its policy is part of a broader effort to ensure that the party’s positions remain clear, coherent, and rooted in open debate. Clouston explains that the SDP believes political parties should be willing to review their positions when public policy questions become more complicated or when new information emerges. But why has this issue become such a significant flashpoint in British politics? Clouston suggests that much of the controversy comes from the way the topic is discussed in public life. In many cases, the conversation quickly becomes polarised, making it difficult for policymakers to explore different perspectives without the debate becoming highly charged. According to him, revisiting policy does not mean abandoning principles — it means taking the time to examine how legislation, social expectations, and individual rights interact in practice. Clouston has spent decades involved in British politics and public debate. He first joined the Social Democratic Party in 1982 and campaigned in elections throughout the politically turbulent 1980s. By 1989 he had already been placed on the SDP’s approved list of parliamentary candidates. His political career later included time in the Conservative Party and service as a district councillor in 1999 on Tynedale Council. Today he serves as leader of the Social Democratic Party, a role he first assumed in 2018 before being re-elected by members in 2020 with strong support. Alongside politics, Clouston is also a writer and commentator whose work has appeared in publications such as The Spectator, spiked, and UnHerd, and he regularly contributes to broadcast discussions on British politics. In this interview, he explains why the SDP believes careful discussion and policy review are essential when addressing complex issues that affect society as a whole.
