Clouston has spent decades involved in British politics and public debate. He first joined the Social Democratic Party in 1982 and campaigned in elections throughout the politically turbulent 1980s. By 1989 he had already been placed on the SDP’s approved list of parliamentary candidates. His political career later included time in the Conservative Party and service as a district councillor in 1999 on Tynedale Council. Today he serves as leader of the Social Democratic Party, a role he first assumed in 2018 before being re-elected by members in 2020 with strong support. Alongside politics, Clouston is also a writer and commentator whose work has appeared in publications such as The Spectator, spiked, and UnHerd, and he regularly contributes to broadcast discussions on British politics.
