William T Sherman: The First Modern General 11 May 2024 --- #civilwar #biography #ushistory William Tecumseh Sherman is forever linked with his famed March to the Sea in the late autumn of 1864. In truth, his subsequent march through South Carolina and part of North Carolina was far more destructive, a fact Sherman acknowledged in his memoirs. He commanded a regiment in the First Battle of Bull Run, a Union defeat which led to him suffering a bout of depression.
