Wind Chills Below Zero | Iowa Weather

from The Iowa Weather Podcast

Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Iowa Weather Podcast — it's Monday, February 23rd. Five degrees. Wind chills at minus nine. Your car groaned when you started it this morning, didn't it? That's the cold we're working with right now.. But folks, this is just the opening act. Today stays brutal. Central Iowa barely cracks twenty-one degrees by four P.M. Eastern Iowa? You'll hit twenty-two around two P.M. Western Iowa does a bit better at twenty-seven by three P.M.. And the Quad Cities matches that. Light winds for most of us, though the Quad Cities sees gusts to fifteen miles an hour early. Here's where it gets weird. Tonight, temperatures actually *climb* while you sleep. Central Iowa drops to twelve around six P.M., then rises to twenty-one by morning. Eastern Iowa falls to thirteen before warming to seventeen overnight. Western Iowa dips to eighteen, then jumps to twenty-four. The Quad Cities? Sixteen early, then eighteen by dawn. Tuesday is a forty-degree swing. Central Iowa hits forty-two. Eastern Iowa reaches forty-three. Western Iowa? Fifty-four degrees. Quad Cities at forty-nine. But those warm temps come with gusty winds — up to thirty miles an hour — creating fire weather conditions. No burn piles tomorrow. Wednesday, a cold front crashes the party. Temperatures drop back to the thirties and forties. And Wednesday night into Thursday? We're tracking a snow system. One to three inches possible in Eastern and Central Iowa. The track is still uncertain, so this could shift. Friday warms back into the fifties before another cooldown this weekend. Light snow possible Sunday. Five degrees to fifty-four in thirty-six hours. Only in Iowa. Keep your phone charged tonight. This week's going to keep us busy. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
