from Maka Tanga · host Good Hope FM
The run is a global charity event with a unique and fun format where the finish line chases you, in aid of the Wings for Life Foundation. 100% of the full entry fee goes to the foundation whose ultimate goal is to find a cure for spinal cord injuries. The run started in 2014 and takes place in 34 or 35 locations around the world at the same time and is broadcast live on Red Bull TV. Connecting all runners virtually through their advanced running app - which also offers a unique audio experience, that will inform, entertain and motivate them along the way. Ultra trail runner Ryan Sandes is the first person to have won all four of the 250-kilometre ‘Desert Races’. In 2008 Sandes won both the Gobi Desert and Sahara races, followed by a first place in the Atacama Desert marathon in Chile in 2009 and the Last Desert event in Antarctica at the end of 2010. During pandemic-enforced hard lockdowns in 2020 he ran 100-miles around his house in Hout Bay, South Africa. Ryan returned to racing in 2021 and finished 8th Madeira Island Ultra Trail. Expeditions and long-distance FKT projects have however become a much bigger focus for Ryan.
