Exodus 17 According to the commandment of the LORD… but there was no water for the people to drink: Israel did exactly what God commanded, following the pillar of cloud and fire; yet there was no water to drink. They were in the will of God but in a difficult time. It is possible to be completely in the will of God yet also in a season of great problems. Moses did what God told him to do and water came from the rock. This was a great miracle of God’s provision and a rebuke to unbelieving and rebellious Israel. God remembered the way Israel tested Him at Massah and Meribah, recalling it in several passages. We would hope that, just like God led Israel out of prison and slavery, God will use this story to teach us the kind of liberation that can only come from Him.
