Wisdom Teeth Gratitude

from The Daily Grateful with Michael Crose · host Michael Crose

Wisdom teeth out? Ouch! But amidst the ice packs, be grateful. Thank your dentist for a smooth surgery, your body for healing, and whoever's bringing the applesauce. A (mostly) pain-free future for your smile? That's something to celebrate (with a gentle sip, of course).

Good morning, Americans. It's Friday. And it absolutely is Friday. Good morning and welcome to The Daily Grateful.

My name is Michael Kroos, and I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to talk about. But I kind of got an idea, so let's see where this goes. Recording this on Thursday night at 8 minutes after 11 p.m. for a broadcast on Friday.

It's been a heck of a week, and I am grateful for the week that I had, even though it was disjointed and weird. My 28-year-old son had to have four wisdom teeth out. And, you know, you worry about your kids. You just do.

Even when they're adults, you worry about your kids. And here's what was going on with him. When you have that many wisdom teeth taken out at one time, it knocks you out. I remember my first wife had that done.

She was gone for like four days. It was just, you know, the ride home was horrendously hurt. It's terrible. The third wife, the final wife, as I like to call her, had it done also.

And she was an absolute mess. I mean, just an absolute mess. So Zach went in to have this done, and I was, you know, a little bit worried about it. You know what?

I'm old, and I still have my wisdom teeth. How's that happen? Still there? Things working?

I don't care. Anyway, I went with him. I took him to have it done, because, you know, I took him to have it done. So we go into the dentist, and I see the x-ray.

They got the x-ray on a flat panel TV, big flat panel TV. And he says, okay, we're going to take this one out. We're going to take this one out. We're going to take this one out.

We're going to take this one out. Then we're also going to take this one out. So not four, but five. Because one of them was laying sideways.

It was not exposed to the skin. It was underneath it. It was laying sideways. And I'm like, oh, my goodness.

Well, the good news was, is he was going to get a twilight sleep. So that was good. That was good. Except for one thing.

Zach drank Diet Coke in the morning before we left. And I had a funny feeling about that. I wasn't sure if that was right or if he was allowed to do that. But he's an adult.

And he did. And he said, have you had anything to drink today? You're not supposed to have any clear liquids or this. And so I had some Diet Coke.

I had a Diet Coke. He goes, we can't give you twilight. You want to reschedule. And Zach had a lot of anxiety about this.

Just tons and tons and tons of anxiety about this. And I was like, oh, goodness. You know, and he says, I've got massive anxiety. Just massive anxiety.

But he said, I want to get this done. I want this behind me. He says, we're just going to give you Novocaine. He goes, okay.

And I'm sitting there saying, just Novocaine. And I see this. They got to go surgically in and take the sideways tooth out of it. Ooh, and I'm very worried about this.

And he says, but I'm going to give you something for anxiety. And he said, okay. So he gave me an injection of something I have no idea. But I was then asked to leave the operating theater and go wait out in the, you know, and I'm just as nervous as can be.

And I figured this was going to be a long, drawn-out thing. About, I don't know, 40 minutes later, they came to get me. They said, come on back. I go back.

And he's doing great. He's doing phenomenal. And he's just, you know, he's animated. He can't talk because his mouth is full of gauze.

But he's trying to talk. And he's, you know, he is just, and he's texting me. Zach is texting me. And he's saying, please thank the doctor and thank all of the staff because they were wonderful.

And I'm sitting there saying, wow, this thing, which would be traumatizing. I mean, if I had to go in and have five teeth taken out with just Novocaine, I would be totally a mess. But yet Zach is taking the time to be grateful for this. He is taking the time to be grateful.

So we got him all packed up, you know, and got all the stuff to take home with him and got his scripts, you know, to take for the antibiotics. And for pain, they just had him doing ibuprofen and then three hours later doing Tylenol. And he came home and I said, you know, go relax because I don't want to lay down. You know, I just want to, you know, so he sat up for a while, watched a little TV.

Then he went in and went to bed. And the recovery, the recovery has been fine. The recovery has been good, as a matter of fact. So I'm very proud of him.

And I'm, I'm just thrilled that he was grateful for everything that happened to him. Just absolutely thrilled that he was grateful for the way that they took care of him and they treated him. And I am grateful to have a son who knows the power of gratitude. I think it's something we all need to think about.

I need to think about it more because I'd have been in there going, ah, if I was looking at something like that. You know, if they're going to do something like that to me, I've got to be knocked out. I won't be, you should go out of me. But he got through it.

It's behind him. And he did it. And he's my champion. And he was grateful in the end.

We'll see you next week, everybody. We'll see you next week.
