Wishing and wondering
from Poetry by Tim Windisch · host Tim Windisch
Wishing and wondering After my texts went unanswered for a few days, I made some more excuses in my head Searched myself to find the reason for her silence, tried to remember every word she said Did I miss my exit once again? Did I miss the warning lights atop the sign saying “Bridge Out” It’s another one of those times I guess; I want to scream but I’m never quite sure what about Was a ride that ended with a full tank of gas, just sat getting baked in the sun with nowhere to go My confusion about her just never seems to be resolved or contain an answer that I would know Then from the silence came another voice, even though I wasn’t listening for the sound They say it’s no surprise, when you least expect it, it seems those good things come around After all that it usually gets dark, a sudden flash in my once quiet heart and it’s thundering Your umbrella and your smile, wiped my blues away; babe you got me wishing and wondering Rounded the bases of male proclivity, the never-ending passion for devouring dime-store romance Took whatever it would give to me, mostly gorging on the fruits and the sugary sweet tasting plants Fattened by a desire to cover the tracks of the tears that stained and ruined my serious endeavors Wanting to have a love machine that fixes broken hearts, just by callously flipping a few levers Reset the emotional pounding that fractures my heart into a million sad excuses and reasons And replant that smile across my soul that makes me glow and become a man for all seasons Then from the silence came another voice, even though I wasn’t listening for the sound They say it’s no surprise, when you least expect it, it seems those good things come around After all that it usually gets dark, a sudden flash in my once quiet heart and it’s thundering Your umbrella and your smile, wiped my blues away; babe you got me wishing and wondering Who is this now, with that unassuming smile, caring eyes, reaching out to pull me in from the storm? Giving me a towel, sitting me close to the fire, this time not to get burned, but just enough to get warm Tell me it’s real, pinched my cheeks so hard, bloods streaks down my face, I’m sure this isn’t one of my dreams Staying close even from a distance, offering resistance, yet secretly wanting it to be just the way it seems She pulls me closer, smiles at me and whispers that this is not the end of anything, just a brand-new start Pulls back, kisses me and smiles traces our initials with her finger on my chest in a great big heart Then from the silence I can hear her voice, even though I wasn’t listening for the sound They say it’s no surprise, when you least expect it, it seems those good things come around After all that it usually gets dark, a sudden flash in my once quiet heart and it’s thundering Her umbrella and her smile, wiped my blues away; she’s got me wishing and wondering Tim Windisch 02/15/2022
