In this episode, Lyndsay Soprano talks to the father/son duo, Rob and Ryan DeLena talk about Ryan's childhood behavior and how it led to placement in therapeutic schools.These schools relied on detrimental methods of behavior modification such as physical restraints. He was heavily medicated and then committed to a mental hospital for further evaluation.His parents were counseled to place Ryan in a group home. They refused.The story of him convincing his parents to fight the medical and educational complexities over his care and school placement is one that cannot be missed. Together they fostered the freedom that Ryan needed to pursue his dream of becoming a professional ski mountaineer.So they took him skiing. And discovered a different child than the version "experts" were so sure about.
