Vandaag: door alle politieke controverse aan het begin van het WK heb ik al geen zin meer om te kijken. ‘Geen zorgen, de wereld zal welkom zijn op het WK in Amerika’, dat zei FIFA-voorzitter Gianni Infantino een paar maanden geleden nog, maar dat blijkt een regelrechte leugen. Er zijn inmiddels al de nodige verhalen over fans, spelers, journalisten en een scheidsrechter die de toegang tot de VS is geweigerd. Volop gedoe dus, om het zachtjes uit te drukken. AD sport Verslaggever Daniel Dwarswaard is de duider van de dag en geeft uitleg: "Je dacht dat het onder de vorige baas van de FIFA (Sepp Blatter) niet erger kon, maar dat kan dus wel. Ik zie het met de FIFA niet meer goedkomen." Meeprater van dienst, AD-hoofdredacteur Rennie Rijpma: "Ik hou heel erg van voetbal, ook om er live bij te zijn, maar die behoefte voel ik nu helemaal niet. Ik duim wel voor Oranje!" Toch is ook bij Daniel het glas halfvol: "Ondanks alle controverse. Hou je vast aan het positieve dat Oranje ook teweegbrengt. Als ik kijk naar mijn zoontje van 9, die nu al slaapschema's aan het maken is. En naar complete wijken en straten in Nederland die Oranje kleuren. Dat is er ook!"
