Women on the African continent have joined other women around the world to find ways in dealing with the effects of disasters. Because of the existence of problems in social structures particularly in Africa, when disasters strike, from a gender perspective - various inequalities and distortions become apparent. Also often seen as primary sustenance providers, African women have identified ways of reducing the incidence and impact of small scale, current disasters that compromise the food security of poor communities. Joyce Nangori is a Project Manager for the Slum Women's Initiative for Development in Uganda. On the side lines of the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Sendai, Japan, she and members of her network demonstrated how they've come together to reduce women's vulnerability and promote community resilience:
