Lesson One: The Antithesis of grace Romans 5:20 = Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: Intro.: Anything and everything good that has happened in our lives is because of God’s grace! Sadly many whom teach about grace do not understand grace. Greek transliteration: kharece pronounced charis. 1. The O.T. law is also the grace of God. Rom.5:20a Many teach as if grace was only a N.T. doctrine but it is also O.T. - We would not know our need to repent if not for the law. Rom. 7:7 - God’s goodness = grace, leads us to repent. Rom. 2:4 - If we did not repent we would all perish. Luke 13:3 2. There has always been more grace than sin. Rom. 5:20b - Sin has abounded. • God’s word reveals the wickedness of sin. Ref. Rom.7:13 • God’s holiness demands judgement on sin. Ref. Deut. 25:16; Prov.6:16; Rev.21:27 - Grace has more abounded. “chew on that a moment” • God’s grace is plentiful. Psalm 103:8 • God’s grace reaches as high as heaven. Psalm 103:11 • It is when we realize the depth of sin we appreciate the grace of God. Rom.6:23 3. Grace is God’s answer to man’s dilemma. Rom.5:21 - Sin has power to bring death. Rom. 5:21a - Grace has power to bring eternal life= greater Rom.5:21b - The devil brought sin into the world but God brought grace into the world. Ref.
