The western plateaus of Tibet and Xinjiang have long held an air of legend and exoticism throughout the history of China; however, despite how emblematic the western regions have become, there has been one western figure that has been obscured in the many years she’s walked its plains. The queen of immortals Xiwangmu has been dated back to Shang dynasty bone inscriptions, often cited as one of the oldest deities of Chinese history, but in many myths she’s relegated to a supporting character.
