Medicare is Usually Superior to Small-Employer Health Insurance There are a number of reasons. a. The gross premium (full price) is lower under Medicare, Medicare Advantage/Medigap, unless you are subject to very high IRMAA. b. The deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums are usually superior under Medicare. c. Rx costs need to be watched, due to the fact that employer-provided plans do not have the Medicare Coverage Gap under Part D Married couples need to calculate to compare. a. Under small-employer provided plans, the deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums may be double an individual. b.
