Introduction: Work for God Many of us may wonder if we are truly serving God in our daily lives. We may feel that our jobs or careers are mundane and unrelated to our spiritual journey. Often in The Salvation Army, we are guilty of speaking only of God's call to officership and full-time ministry. But the Bible is clear that whatever our job or career, we are each called to work for God. The truth is that God calls each of us to serve him wholeheartedly, regardless of our occupation. In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus shares a parable that teaches us an important lesson about using our time, talents, and treasures diligently to serve God in whatever we do. The Parable of the Talents In this parable, a master entrusts his servants with different amounts of money, or talents, before going on a journey. Two of the servants invest and multiply their talents, while the third servant buries his talent in the ground out of fear. When the master returns, he commends the first two servants for their faithfulness and diligence, but he rebukes the third servant for his lack of initiative and fearfulness. Using Our Time, Talents, and Treasures Diligently This parable teaches us that God expects us to use our time, talents, and treasures diligently in order to serve him wholeheartedly. It is not about the specific job or career we have, but about the attitude and effort we put into it. Whether we are a teacher, doctor, office worker, or stay-at-home parent, we can glorify God by being diligent and faithful in our work. When we work with excellence and integrity, we reflect the character of God and become a light in our workplaces. Our actions and attitudes can have a profound impact on those around us, showing them the love and grace of God. By using our talents and abilities to the best of our abilities, we are honouring God and fulfilling our purpose in daily life. Doing Our Daily Work out of Love for God While some individuals may be called into full-time ministry, it is important to remember that all of us are called to serve God in our daily lives. Our work is not separate from our spiritual journey; it is an integral part of it. When we approach our jobs with a mindset of serving God and loving others, our work becomes an act of worship. Every task, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, can be an opportunity to demonstrate our love for God. Whether it is completing paperwork, caring for patients, or cooking meals for our family, we can offer our work as a sacrifice of praise to God. When we work with love and dedication, we are working for God. Remember, God doesn't necessarily call us to quit our jobs and move into full-time ministry. Wherever we work and serve, God expects us to use our time, talents, and treasures diligently in order to serve him wholeheartedly. Let us embrace our daily work as an opportunity to glorify God and fulfil our purpose in life. May we approach each day with a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to work for God in all that we do.
