Working for the Right Audience
from The Gen X Disciple · host Gen X Disciple
Gen X gave our twenties and thirties to careers that didn't always reciprocate what we brought. We watched companies promise loyalty and deliver layoffs. The result is a specific kind of work cynicism — not laziness, but a low-grade awareness that the effort might not matter, that the recognition might not come, that the system isn't measuring the right things. This episode offers a reframe that doesn't require the system to change.Colossians 3:23–24 was written to people with even less control over their circumstances than we have — actual servants — and Paul's instruction is striking in its simplicity: change your audience. Work as working for the Lord, not for human masters. The episode digs into what changes when God becomes the primary audience: the work nobody notices still gets noticed, the integrity maintained without reward still matters, the effort brought to unglamorous tasks still has dignity and eternal weight."Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23–24, NIV) Today's challenge: pick one task you've been doing half-heartedly and do it this week as if God is the audience and it matters eternally — notice what changes.
