World Cup Update July 19th, 2026

New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey was the place for the final between Spain and Argentina. Before the game, fans were entertained at the closing ceremonies with performances by IShowSpeed, Post Malone, Robbie Williams, Nicole Scherzinger, and Laura Pausini. After the closing ceremonies concluded, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony-award winner Jennifer Hudson wowed the crowd with an astounding rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. After the singing of the national anthem, it was time for both teams to battle. Will, heart, determination and perseverance were tested throughout much of the game as both teams displayed great defense. Just before the end of regulation, at the 93rd minute Argentina’s Enzo Fernández was given a red card after making contact with a Spain player. Due to Fernández receiving a yellow card earlier in the game, he would be ejected from the game causing Argentina to be down to ten players on the field. With both teams failing to score in regulation, the game would be tied at zero going into extra time. In the first half of extra time, both teams fought hard and battled it out with no one scoring a goal. In the second half of extra time, Spain finally broke free and would seal the deal with Nico Williams making a pass to Ferran Torres to score the go-ahead and game-winning goal for Spain giving them a one to nothing win and the tournament victory. At the end of the match, Spain’s Unai Simón won the Golden Glove award for being the tournament’s best goalkeeper, Pau Cubarsí won the FIFA Young Player Award for being the best player under the age of 21 and, Rodri won the Golden Ball award for being the best overall player in the tournament. This is Spain’s first World Cup victory since 2010. As for the runner-up Argentina, they fall short in their pursuit to win back-to-back World Cup titles.
