The Fourth of July weekend concluded with a dogfight between Mexico and England in the round of 16 at Estadio Mexico City in the city of Mexico City, Mexico. In the first half, England’s Jude Bellingham scored goals in the 36th and 38th minutes giving England the lead two-to-nothing. In the 42nd minute, Mexico’s Julian Quiñones would score a goal cutting England’s lead two to one going into halftime. In the 54th minute, England’s Jarell Quansah was ejected from the game after being awarded a red card when his cleat made contact with a Mexican player’s leg while going for a loose ball. After Mexico received a yellow card on a penalty, England would take a three to one lead in the 60th minute when Harry Kane scored a goal on a penalty kick. Shortly after England received a yellow card on a penalty, in the 69th minute Mexico’s Raul Jimenez would score on a penalty cutting England’s lead three to two. The remainder of the game saw Mexico being aggressive on offense, but England’s defense and its goalkeeper Thomas Pickford showed up when it mattered helping England get the win three to two. England will face Norway in the quarterfinals on July 11th in Miami Gardens, Florida. Meanwhile, after the loss to Norway Neymar officially announced his retirement from international soccer. Neymar ends his career at New York/New Jersey stadium the same stadium where he made his debut for Brazil. As for Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, he announced that this year’s World Cup will be his last.
