They say all good things must come to an end. For the United States, that appeared to be the case as they battled Belgium in a matchup in the round of 16 in front of a packed crowd at Seattle Stadium in the city of Seattle, Washington. From start to finish, the United States lacked aggression, intensity and passion as Belgium took advantage of the United States careless mistakes and used their defensive strategy to win four to one. In the 9th and 33rd minute of the first half, Belgium’s Charles de Ketelaere scored goals giving Belgium a two to nothing lead. After Belgium received a yellow card on a penalty, the United States’ Malik Tillman scored a goal on a penalty kick cutting Belgium’s lead two to one going into halftime. The goal by Tillman was supposed to serve as motivation going into the second half instead it would be complete destruction. In the 57th minute of the game, United States goalkeeper Matt Freese left his own goal while attempting to go after a loose ball causing Belgium’s Hans Vanaken to score an easy goal giving Belgium a three to one lead. At the 93rd minute of the game, Romelu Lukaku would score a goal putting the icing on the cake for Belgium as they would win four to one. Belgium will face Spain in the quarterfinals on July 10th in Inglewood, California. Meanwhile, for the United States this loss continues their streak of not making the quarterfinals. The last time the United States reached the quarterfinals was in 2002 when the tournament was held in South Korea and Japan.
