Pandemian varjolla valtiot ovat tiukentaneet rajoituksiaan ja rikollisryhmät vahvistaneet valtaansa. Vuoden 2021 World Watch List -raportista ilmenee, että koronapandemia on pahentanut syrjintää, epätasa-arvoista kohtelua ja vainoa, jonka kohteena on vähintään 340 miljoonaa kristittyä. Open Doors International -avustusjärjestö kokoaa vuosittain laajoihin kartoituksiin ja asiantuntijahaastatteluihin perustuvan WWL-raportin maista, joissa kristityt kohtaavat vaikeuksia uskonvakaumuksensa vuoksi. Vainon taso on tänä vuonna ensimmäistä kertaa äärimmäinen tai erittäin vakava kaikissa listauksen 50 kärkimaassa. 74 maassa (viime vuonna 73:ssa) vaino on vähintään vakavaa.
