Worry

If you’re human, you experience worry. And yet Jesus tells us not to worry. How do we understand Jesus’ words and put them into practice? Andrea Ackermann helps us explore this question. [Matthew 6:25-34] Profession of Faith / Benediction Leader: Today’s Profession of Faith draws on the poem, “First Lesson” by Phillip Booth and Philippians 4:5-7. “First Lesson” Lie back daughter, let your head be tipped back in the cup of my hand. Gently, and I will hold you. Spread your arms wide, lie out on the stream and look high at the gulls. A dead- man’s float is face down. You will dive and swim soon enough where this tidewater ebbs to the sea. Daughter, believe me, when you tire on the long thrash to your island, lie up, and survive. As you float now, where I held you and let go, remember when fear cramps your heart what I told you: lie gently and wide to the light-year stars, lie back, and the sea will hold you. Leader: You are the God of the sea and the stars. You calm the storms of our hearts and in our world. Teach us to lie gently, trusting you, facing you and the light-year stars. Let your gentleness be evident to all. All: The Lord is near. Leader: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. When fear cramps our hearts, hold us, Holy Spirit. Invite us to float, to trust, to pray. All: The Lord is near. Leader: Jesus, we are weary and tired. We spread our arms wide to rest in you. We cast our worries on you. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. All: The Lord is near. Amen.
