“Worship in the Whirlwind”

from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today · host Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus

Oct. 19, 2026 Daily Devotional: “Worship in the Whirlwind” Job 42:1–2, 5 "Then Job answered the Lord and said: 'I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted... I had heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.'" The story of Job spans one of the most intense spiritual journeys recorded in Scripture. In Job 1, we meet a man who lived an exemplary life. He was faithful, righteous, and blessed beyond measure. He worshiped God in times of abundance and guarded his family in prayer. Yet, in a single day, catastrophe struck—he lost his wealth, hislivelihood, and his children. Through the pain, Job fell to the ground in worship, uttering those famous words: "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord" (Job 1:21). For forty-one chapters, Job walked through the dark valley of grief, unansweredquestions, and well-meaning friends who offered flawed advice. Job didn't curse God, but he struggled deeply with the why. When God finally responded from the whirlwind in chapter 38, He didn't offer Job an explanation for his suffering. Instead, He offered Job a revelation of Who He is. By Job 42, Job’s heart had undergone a profound transformation. In Job 1, Job knew God through tradition, duty, and theology ("I had heard of You by the hearing of the ear"). In Job 42, after walking through the fire, Job encountered God personally ("but now my eye sees You"). Our trials rarely come with immediate explanations, but they do carry the potential for direct encounters. Suffering breaks through theoretical faith and forces us into a real, lived intimacy with the Creator. Job’s circumstances hadn't even been restored yet when he spoke chapter 42, yet his soul was already healed because he had seen the Lord. Move beyond the hearsay of faith. Is your relationship with God based mostly on what you've heard from pastors, parents, or books, or on what you've personally experienced with Him? Ask God to reveal Himself to you afresh today. Surrender the "Why". Like Job, we often demand reasons for our pain. Practice surrendering yourunanswered questions into the hands of a God whose plans cannot be thwarted. Trust that God is working behind the scenes, even when life feels out of control.
