Would you do something?
from Japanese Grammar Tips · host Yuya Sato
In this lesson, I will introduce you three ways of making a request using the te-form of a verb. They have different degrees of politeness, so you need to differentiate them depending on who you are talking to. First one, the te-form of a verb plus いただけませんか. (polite expression) Second one, the te-form of a verb plus くれませんか.(less polite, but still somewhat polite) Third one, the te-form of a verb plus くれない?(casual expression) <いただけませんか> にほんご を おしえて いただけませんか。 Would you teach me Japanese? *おしえて is the te-form of a verb, おしえる, which means "teach" or "tell". とうきょうえき まで の みち を おしえて いただけませんか。 Would you tell me the way to the Tokyo station? <くれませんか> にほんご を おしえて くれませんか。 Will you teach me Japanese? ペン を かして くれませんか。 Will you lend me your pen? *かして is the te-form of a verb, かす, which means "lend". <くれない?> にほんご おしえて くれない。 Teach me Japanese, will you? ペン かして くれない。 Lend me your pen, will you? <Just the te-form of a verb itself> にほんご おしえて。 Teach me Japanese. ペン かして。 Lend me your pen.
