Summary

This month I started doing some short podcasts of some of the recent poems on this site. I don’t know if there will be any interest in hearing the poems but I’ll give it a few months. It’s not a very difficult process using Anchor and they are available for you on Spotify. I am adding some other podcast services and so Writing the Day is also available on Google Podcasts, Pocket Casts, and RadioPublic. I hope you check them out. Leave a comment and let me know what you think. If the podcasts acquire a bit of an audience, I have lots of archived poems that I might add. Writing into the Day Elizabeth Martin In this series, I will be reading mentors texts and providing you and your students some quickwriting and/or discussion-based writing ideas. Writing can seem very challenging, especially to students who haven’t had a ton of practice. So, providing short, consistent and relatively low-risk opportunities to write can make all the difference in eliminating the intimidation factor that often comes with on-demand writing. I usually like my students to start our sessions by beginning with a quickwrite or, what I like to call, Writing into the Day. Coming People, The by Charles F. Dole (1845 - 1927) LibriVox Dole briefly sketches the history of life, and shows how it has a definite direction - toward the survival of the kind and gentle people. It's a challenging, and quite persuasive argument, and also a much needed one in light of the dog-eat-dog theories out there. Dole shows that in our evolving society, our traditional understanding of "survival of the fittest" needs to be updated. A book that was way ahead of its time, yet so suited to it. Some may argue that - since he was writing The Coming People before the first two world wars - that he was obviously wrong. However, his argument remains valid given current scientific evidence cited in such books as "Evolution and Empathy", and "The Age of Empathy", and it's noteworthy that he wrote another book after World War I (see, A Religion for the New Day, 1920, where he states that while society is still quite barbaric, he retains his powerful conviction that it "is improving and improvable". ).
