WSVA Spotlight on Valley Agriculture - irginia Agricultural Food Assistance Program

The Virginia Agricultural Food Assistance Program (VAFAP), created by the General Assembly in 2021 and managed by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, connects Virginia farmers with food banks to supply fresh, locally grown foods to families in need. Initially funded at $600,000, the program has expanded to $1.1 million and grown from five to six participating sub‑grantee agencies. These agencies purchase Virginia-grown fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, and other fresh foods at fair market value—giving farmers a reliable market and food‑insecure families healthier options that food banks often struggle to provide. In the Shenandoah Valley, partners such as Shenandoah Valley Orchards, White House Foods, and local dairies are actively involved. Farmers can also receive tax credits for donated products.
