Hello coffee lovers, it's Holly Shannon. And my coffee short today is what is fika. So I'm bringing this up, because I'm going to Stockholm soon. And I'm very excited to share about this Swedish custom, which I learned about from somebody from Spotify. Earlier in my podcasting career in my first podcast Culture Factor, I interviewed this amazing person who was from Spotify. And they talked about fika as part of their company culture. So here I am headed to, to Sweden in Stockholm specifically, and I'm looking forward to taking part in this custom, which is fika. So the Swedish custom is a break from activity during which people drink coffee. Sometimes they eat some cakes or snacks and they relax with others. So essentially, it is the coffee meetup. And I like the word fika. Also, because here's the geek in me. It's like an inverted syllable slang term derived from Kaffee, which was the 19th century word for coffee. So if you just flip it, and you make Kaffee fika. Like you flip it, I know, I'm such a geek. Anyway, the Swedes take two fika breaks, one in mid morning and one again, around 3pm. So I think I just love these people, because that's what I like to do. And another little historical note, which I will cite this in the show notes. It's from the Dolce Vita in 1999, out of London. So cafes or coffee houses have been serving coffee for over 500 years. And the first coffee house was in Constantinople, in 1475, by traders arriving from Damascus and Aleppo. So I thought that was just kind of a cool thing. And I'm really excited to go to Stockholm and spend some time in different coffee houses around the city, and sort of just mesh into the whole environment of the coffee meetup. That is the Swedish form of that. And if you happen to listen to this short and partake in the fika, or know of some really amazing coffee houses or people I should meet when I'm there, please feel free to DM me on Instagram at Holly Shannon. And this might be one of my shortest shorts, but I did want to introduce you all to what is fika. So thanks everybody.
