Wuthering Heights Chapter XXXI

In which we visit the Heights on a frosty day and find Catherine Heathcliff disdainfully engaged in domestic chores, her once lively spirit dampened and her books destroyed by Heathcliff’s command, while Hareton struggles between his desire for education and the sting of ridicule. Heathcliff’s sombre presence and the household’s uneasy atmosphere cast a shadow over the scene, leaving the narrator to ponder the bleakness that lingers there.
