What is the greatest threat to the monetary system today? Ryan Avent, Economics columnist at The Economist, Author of The Wealth of HumansI would say intellectual inflexibility. Many of the central bankers in charge today cut their teeth in the 1970s and 1980s, at a time when inflation was seen as the most significant macroeconomic problem. In their view, accelerating inflation looms around every corner, and central banks' ability to keep it in check is their greatest achievement. But the world doesn't like anything like it did in the 70s and 80s. Central bankers need to be willing to consider new models of the global economy and new approaches to monetary policy: like new targets and policy instruments. If they are too slow to react, and growth is sluggish or recession returns, then governments might deprive central banks of their independence, and that could lead to much more volatile economic conditions in lots of countries.
