无论冯特得到了怎样的评价，不可否认的是，冯特改变了心理学的思潮，改变了心理学的观念。在《生理心理学原理》第一版的序言中，他写道：“在这里，我呈现给公众的是标示出一门新学科领域的努力”。如果说那些赫尔姆霍兹和费希纳等生理学家们设计出了心理学这幢房屋的结构，那么冯特就是这幢房屋的建筑师。虽然冯特没有创造出心理学，但他建立了心理学。
