今天的人类已经知道了银河系是一个巨大的旋涡星系，从正面看，它是这样的（如图），当然，任何银河系的正面图像都是画出来的，不是实拍的，因为我们就身处于这个巨大的漩涡中，不可能拍到银河系的正面全身照。我们只能拍摄到银河系的侧面照。但是，人类得到这样的一副银河系的正确图像并不是一帆风顺的，中间走过弯路，也引起过大争论。
