Story textPlanet Earth is formed of different layers, with its inner core being its deepest one. It's 3 200 miles, or about 5 149 kilometers, below the Earth's crust and is mainly composed of iron and nickel. The inner core is surrounded by the outer core, a liquid, which enables the inner core to rotate at a different speed to the planet itself. A team of scientists have been studying seismic waves from earthquakes since the 1960s in order to determine at what speed the inner core rotates. They have found that, since 2009, the speed of rotation of the inner core has significantly been reduced and may even have paused. Scientists are surprised by what they have discovered and hope that future research into the rotation of the inner core will help them to better understand how the different layers of the Earth interact with one another.
