Story textMount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth, reaching 5.5 miles (8.85 km) above sea level. Every year, it continues to grow taller due to geological changes. What's more, Everest's growth is equally affected by both the Kosi and Arun rivers, which joined around 89,000 years ago. This caused fast erosion in the area, which made the surface weight lighter. This reduction in weight results in a recurrent process called "isostatic rebound." In this process, as the surface weight decreases, the Earth's crust rises, lifting all land masses on it. This process adds about 0.2 to 0.5 millimeters to Everest's height each year, which is responsible for roughly 10 % of its yearly growth.
