常有人詢問：「醫師，我都有認真刷牙，為什麼覺得牙齒愈來愈長、牙縫也變大？」這就是牙齦萎縮的症狀。 所謂的牙齦萎縮或牙齦退縮，就是泛指牙齒周圍的牙齦軟組織邊緣向牙根移動，露出更多牙冠結構或牙齒根部，牙齦和牙齒之間也會形成更大的縫隙，進而引起細菌的聚集，如果沒有及時治療，可能會傷害牙齒周圍的組織和齒槽骨結構，有時候更會導致牙齒脫落。
