如银的月光里，一张碧油油的毡上，羊群静静地睡了。他们雪也似的毛和月掩映着，啊！美丽和聪明！狼们悄悄从山上下来，羊儿梦中惊醒：瑟瑟地浑身乱颤；腿软了，不能立起，只得跪着了；眼里含着满眶亮晶晶的泪；口中不住地芈芈哀鸣。如死的沉寂给叫破了；月已暗澹，像是被芈芈声吓着似的！狼们终于张开血盆般的口，露列着的牙齿，像多少把钢刀。不幸的羊儿宛转钢刀下！羊儿宛转，狼们享乐，他们喉咙里时时透出来可怕的胜利的笑声！他们呼啸着去了。碧油油的毡上新添了斑斑的鲜红血迹。羊们纵横躺着，一样地痉挛般挣扎着，有几个长眠了！他们如雪的毛上，都涂满泥和血；啊！怎样地可怕！这时月又羞又怒又怯，掩着面躲入一片黑云里去了！
