Two years ago, you and I Said our reluctant good-byes Today, we will at last Happily reunite! Looking down from the airplane Enormous glass walls gleam coldly Concrete jungles resemble The battlefield ready for war Luckily, I have you Whom I hold so dear You take me from the airport To the hotel Calmly telling me You have created another family here Without me In this lonely foreign land You two lonely souls Depend on each other for survival The night casts its web of darkness Silently all around The creatures caught in it Struggle mightily to survive To satisfy their needs and desires All alone in the hotel Twin satin pillows on the bed Unfamiliar streets downstairs Boisterous clamor outside None of this, belongs to me And I, no longer belong To the world I just said good-bye In the distance, the Statue of Liberty Holding her torch highTonight, are you just like me Cold and in despair? Fly away, just like that bat Fly to an unknown place Or, perhaps the batman will catch me If I jump down from here? A voice whispers into my ears: If your first night Is this cold and bleak Then every night afterwards Will only become better. Hang in there! Hold me, who is here to hold me? I need your warmth To endure this cold first nightTomorrow, maybe tomorrow After the sun rises All will be bright Note: This poem is based on the true experience of a Chinese immigrant. She endured an emotionally painful and lonely first night in America, and eventually realized her American Dream. She epitomizes the success of thousands and thousands of American immigrants. No matter how hard life&`&s blows are, as long as we live, we will see a new sun every day. God will bless us.
