Yefrosinya Zenkova: 18-Year-Old Partisan Leader Who Sabotaged the Nazis in Belarus

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Yefrosinya Zenkova was only 18 when she became one of the youngest Soviet partisan leaders resisting Nazi occupation in Belarus. As leader of the “Young Avengers,” she helped organize more than 20 sabotage operations against German forces during the Second World War.Born in 1923 into a peasant family in Ushaly, Zenkova joined the underground struggle after witnessing the German invasion of the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa. Operating near Obol, she founded and led a Komsomol resistance group whose members derailed trains, destroyed infrastructure, gathered intelligence, and carried out attacks against German occupation forces. The Young Avengers became increasingly daring, even targeting high-ranking German officials with concealed magnetic mines. Their resistance came at an enormous cost. After betrayal led to the arrest and execution of several members of the group, Zenkova managed to evade capture. Unable to find her, the Nazis retaliated against her family, executing her mother Marfa in her place.Zenkova survived the occupation and, after the war, dedicated herself to rebuilding and preserving the memory of the resistance. In 1958, she received the title Hero of the Soviet Union, and in 1976 she became an honorary citizen of Vitebsk. Her story represents the extraordinary role played by young women in resistance movements on the Eastern Front and the enormous personal sacrifices demanded by the struggle against Nazi occupation. Yefrosinya Zenkova died in 1984 at the age of 60, leaving behind a legacy of courage, resistance, and sacrifice. This episode is part of the series The Anti-Fascist Heroes.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
