Founded in 1886 on Manhattan's Lower East Side as a modest elementary school for Jewish immigrants, Yeshiva University grew into the intellectual flagship of Modern Orthodoxy, driven by a bold vision to bridge two seemingly contradictory worlds. Guided by the philosophy of Torah Umadda—the synthesis of traditional Jewish religious study and secular academic knowledge—the institution challenged the historic divide between faith and Western scholarship, producing generations of leaders who were as deeply versed in Talmudic debate as they were in law, medicine, and higher academia.
