The college basketball rumor mill went into overdrive following North Carolina's decision to part ways with Hubert Davis. With one of the sport's premier blue-blood jobs suddenly vacant, all eyes turned to Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd as a primary target to take over in Chapel Hill. The speculation reached a fever pitch following Arizona's Elite Eight victory over Purdue. When asked about his future and the rampant UNC rumors, Lloyd gave a rather eyebrow-raising response: "The sun may be shining on this team and me coaching it right now... but Arizona is going to have another good coach after me, I promise you. The place is special." To many in the media and on social media, speaking about his eventual successor while actively in the middle of a Final Four run sounded like a man with one foot already out the door. Adding fuel to the fire, coaching peer Doug Gottlieb claimed that Tar Heel royalty Michael Jordan personally called Lloyd to recruit him to Chapel Hill. Insiders have pointed to a rumored disconnect between Lloyd and the Arizona administration regarding NIL funding, noting that UNC possesses the massive financial war chest Lloyd might need to sustain a modern dynasty. Of course, leaving Tucson wouldn't be easy. Lloyd just snapped a 25-year Final Four drought for the Wildcats and has deep roots on the West Coast.
