You ARE A College Student

from Reimagining the Alliance Educator

In our season finale, the staff at Alliance Dr. Olga Mohan High School discuss the programmatic costs they’ve added in order to support the Reimagining the Alliance Educator pilot. Besides bringing on an additional teacher to keep class sizes down, they’re turning to the strong partnership they have with L.A. Trade Tech, so they can direct scholars towards the dual enrollment courses they’re now able to offer. Dual Enrollment gives scholars the incredible opportunity to take college classes while they’re still in high school. And as you’ll hear, these scholars really do recognize the potential in this program. As 11th grader Eric says, “I would be a fool if I didn't take a college course next year, because one they're free and two, they help boost my GPA tremendously. They look amazing on college transcripts, because you look ambitious and just an overall go-getter.” So yes, the Reimagining the Alliance Educator pilot program greatly benefit the teachers by giving them double planning time from past years (in Mohan’s case), but it's clear that it's helping create a stronger sense of wellbeing for the kids as well. Mohan High School is seeing scholars becoming more excited about school, as their needs are met in new ways. Principal Andrew King tells us, “When you look at their research when it comes to dual enrollment, the reality is that there's so much benefit to students enrolled in dual enrollment classes for a variety of reasons. The first being that you immediately create a college going culture starting day one because they're not high school students anymore. They are college students. For those students that never thought they were going to be a college student, I constantly remind them, “But you are. You are a college student. You're taking college classes!”  Hosted on Acast.
