You Are Not Who You Think You Are

from The Bigger Why · host Samuel Weber

Who are you, really? We tend to think of identity as something fixed. We tell ourselves: I'm the smart one. I'm the funny one. I'm successful. I'm the screw-up. I'm just not the kind of person who does that. But those labels can quietly become self-fulfilling prophecies. We behave according to the person we believe ourselves to be, the people around us respond to that behavior, and their reactions reinforce the story we've been telling ourselves all along. In this episode of The Bigger Why, Sam Weber explores the idea that there may be no single, fixed version of the self. Different relationships bring out different sides of us. Our families can pull us back into childhood roles. Our environments shape how we behave. Even the way we dress, the people we surround ourselves with, and the beliefs we hold can become part of the language through which we construct an identity. Sam also explores the power of deliberately stepping into another version of yourself—an alter ego capable of doing the things you've convinced yourself you can't do—and why, over time, you may discover that this person wasn't someone else at all. Maybe the goal isn't to finally figure out who you are. Maybe it's to realize that who you become is still being written.
