You Can’t Executive Order a Mine Into Existence — Bizarro World 375

from Bizarro World

The free version of Episode 375 of Investing in Bizarro World is now live. Gerardo is away this week, so Nick goes solo with a chart-heavy look at the dollar, Treasury yields, gold, silver, copper, critical minerals, and uranium. The biggest macro development is the dollar breaking back below 100 on the DXY, helping gold rebound toward $4,300 even as Treasury yields remain elevated. Gold still has work to do technically, but the summer correction increasingly looks like it is trying to bottom. Copper is another story entirely. Futures hit an all-time high around $6.86 per pound as U.S. tariff uncertainty drives record imports and stockpiling, Asian inventories tighten, and major producers like Codelco continue struggling to meet production goals. Mines are getting older, deeper, and lower grade — while new copper projects can take decades to discover, permit, finance, and build. That creates an awkward problem for Washington. Trump’s latest executive orders and presidential determinations call for more domestic sourcing of copper, rare earths, tungsten, niobium, and other critical materials, while restricting exports of strategic metals and even certain scrap. The policy direction is clear, but Nick uses Trilogy Metals to make the larger point: no executive order can magically turn an undeveloped mineral project into a producing mine overnight. Nick also lays out the bullish uranium case. Global reactor capacity is projected to roughly double, uranium demand could rise from about 180 million pounds annually to 390 million pounds, current mine supply already falls short of consumption, and major producers are struggling to expand. Meanwhile, U.S. reactors consume roughly 50 million pounds per year while domestic mines produce only about 2.1 million pounds. Then things get Bizarro: Washington state taxes, government-owned grocery stores, rising support for socialism, falling purchasing power, women’s sports, midterm politics, and the devastating Spokane wildfires — including the role of arson, repeat offenders, extreme weather conditions, and an increasingly strained power system.
