You Can’t Live in Sodom and Stay Unchanged | Fire From the Sky

from Faith and Victory Church Auburn Sermons · host Faith and Victory Church

In this message from Genesis 19:1–29, we examine the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the dangerous path that brought Lot and his family to the edge of disaster. Lot originally chose the fertile Jordan Valley because it looked comfortable, prosperous, and easy. Although he knew Sodom was already filled with wickedness, he moved his tents near the city and eventually began living inside it. Over time, Lot became established in the community while attempting to keep one foot in his faith and one foot in the surrounding culture. When two angels arrived in Sodom, the city’s corruption was fully exposed. Lot tried to protect his guests, but the crisis also revealed how deeply compromise had affected his judgment. His family was placed in danger because he had remained in an environment he knew was wicked. The angels warned Lot that judgment was coming and commanded him to escape. Yet Lot hesitated. He negotiated over where he would go, struggled to leave his comfortable life behind, and had to be physically pulled away from the city by God’s messengers. Lot’s wife looked back toward the life she still loved and became a pillar of salt. This message highlights three important lessons. First, sin is dangerous and always carries consequences. Lot lost his home, possessions, position, wife, and way of life. Sin will never be satisfied with a small compromise—it will continue demanding more. Second, complacency can destroy spiritual boundaries. Lot was described as a righteous man, but he placed himself and his family in a position of constant temptation and danger. Being surrounded by wickedness made it less shocking and left him spiritually unprepared when judgment came. Third, God is gracious. Lot was not rescued because of flawless behavior or personal merit. He was rescued through God’s mercy and in response to Abraham’s intercession. Like every believer, Lot was declared righteous through faith rather than moral perfection. God is patient and desires people to repent, but His patience should never be mistaken for approval. Judgment will come unexpectedly. We must separate ourselves from sin, draw close to the Lord, establish strong boundaries, and refuse to look back at the life from which God has rescued us.
